18/02/2010 - Mitel offers truly virtualized IP telephony

Mitel Networks and VMWare have come up with a virtualized offering of the Mitel core 3300 ICP telephony system. The new Mitel Communications Director generic software called vMCD will run on a virtual server platform based on VMWare's vSphere 4. The platform will also be able to host non-Mitel business apps like email, web servers and database applications.

According to No Jitter, what makes this offering different is the ability for the telephony system to run on the virtual server platform with all these non-communication focused software apps. The main problem associated with such a system would be latency and jitter, but the two companies have set up vMCD to put priority on voice communications so that there is no loss of quality when customers use the voice system.
