Pinger, a startup based in San Jose, California, aims to challenge Skype (and others) by offering free voice calls. They are doing so by piggybacking voip on their hugely popular TextFree application, which allows sending free text SMS messages. Pinger is currently serving 1.2 billion ads and sent 4 billion messages each month and is only expected to raise its numbers.

Vonage has launched Vonage Mobile, its first mobile calling application for smartphones. This free downloadable application provides seamless, low-cost international calling while on Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
It’s available for download on the iPhone, BlackBerry and iPod touch.
The app works with the existing mobile plans, what lets you keep your number, mobile device, existing contacts and mobile service provider.
23/07/2009 - Skype Users Rise by 37m, Revenues up 25% in Q2

Skype's subscriber base just keeps on climbing, with another 37 million people added in the second quarter - taking the total year-to-date increase to 75 million.
Growing subscribers also means growing revenues and the VoIP company saw Q2 revenue jump 25 per cent year-over-year to USD $170 million.
16/07/2009 - JAJAH powering voice, SMS for online dating sites
Online dating sites Match.com and eHarmony announced they are using JAJAH's IP telephony platform to enable users to make calls, send SMS messages and leave voice mail for other users, according to the companies. JAJAH is rushing to the altar for the opportunity by launching JAJAH's Platform for Dating, which the company will market to other online dating services.
JAJAH CEO Trevor Healy said in a statement that JAJAH's focus on reliability and security is making it easier for people to find love online, which is now my early favorite for corporate overstatement of the year. But, despite Healy's hyperbole, the market for Internet dating communications could be a lucrative one for JAJAH, since members likely will feel more comfortable contacting each other via individual JAJAH numbers, rather than giving out home or cell phone numbers to strangers met online.
