09/04/2012 - Survey: Business lean to T1 lines for trunking, but SIP trunking uptake grows

A new survey has found that while the use of SIP trunking is growing rapidly, businesses have made T1 lines the most commonly used trunking service today, and that's not likely to change through 2014.

Infonetics, in a survey of more than 100 medium and large enterprises in North America, said businesseses were continuing to migrate to VoIP on their premises. It also said about one third of the companies said they use SIP trunking currently, and 42 percent said they'll use it by 2014.

Infonetics said service providers have an opportunity to make their mark in SIP trunking, a market it described as "wide open," without a dominant player currently in the market.

Incumbent providers like AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) are in use by the most respondents, providers such as RingCentral, Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Bandtel, Charter (Nasdaq: CHTR), 8x8 (Nasdaq: EGHT), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), and Sprint show up in survey responses as providers enterprises are evaluating

Businesses are deploying SIP trunking because of its centralization, easier management and switching as part of infrastructure upgrade, said Infonetics.

09/04/2012 - Providers saw $58B from VoIP in 2011; 16.6 CAGR forecast through 2015

Videoconferencing is acquiring rock star status in the enterprise communications space as more and more companies opt to roll out technology supporting the virtual face-to-face tool, but make no mistake that VoIP is still a major revenue producer in the industry--one that's likely to continue growing through at least 2015.

A pair of recent reports from Infonetics Research and TechNavio point to a compound annual growth rate that could near 17 percent between 2011 and 2015.

The TechNavio reports said it expects the global VoIP market to be driven by strong demand for the service and a continued transition from legacy carrier voice networks to VoIP. But, it warns, while CAGR could hit 16.6 percent, the falling price of VoIP equipment and competition for IMS vendors could impact growth.

In a recent research note, meanwhile, Infonetics pointed out that the revenue service providers get from residential and SOHO VoIP subscribers "eclipses what they get from businesses."

But, points out Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS an Infonetics, "the business segment is growing about twice as fast, due in large part to the surging popularity of SIP trunking and hosted VoIP and UC services.

"Adoption of VoIP services across both the residential and business segments continues to grow, and we expect strong global growth in VoIP service revenue over at least the next five years," Myers said.

Infonetics pointed out in its latest "VoIP and UC services and Subscribers Market Share and Forecast," that global service providers saw $58 billion in revenue from business and residential/SOHO VoIP services in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010. The report also said the number of seats for hosted business VoIP and unified communications services is on track to more than double between 2012 and 2016. The number of residential and SOHO VoIP subscribers grew 14 percent in 2011, to more than 178 million worldwide, as consumers increasingly opt for no fixed-line voice connections.

The year also saw SIP trunking service revenue jump 128 percent, as businesses continued to move to SIP trunking for flexibility, centralization of resources and cost effective voice connectivity.

Hosted PBX and UC service revenue rose on the strength of demand for cloud-based services.

NTT was the world's largest largest VoIP service provider in 2011, with close to 7 percent of global residential and SOHO subscribers, followed by Comcast and France Télécom.

18/08/2011 - Report: Avaya keeps lead on Cisco in PBX shipments in second quarter

Avaya topped the overall PBX market for the third straight quarter, claiming about one quarter of worldwide revenue in 2Q2011, according to new research.

Infonetics Research said the company was helped by steady shipments and healthy average selling prices. Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), which last week released earnings for the fourth quarter and full year that buoyed its stock price after a steady drift downward, followed Avaya in second position, and established a slight lead in overall line shipments.

"The top enterprise telephony vendors remain in a tight battle to gain new customers and hold onto existing ones as enterprises migrate to IP and unified communications solutions," said Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics. "For the third quarter in a row, Avaya came out on top in the overall PBX market."

Despite a small quarterly decline, global PBX/KTS phone system revenue was down 2.3 percent to $2.02 billion compared to Q1, the segment is up 3.9 percent from a year ago. That continues a trend of a slow but steady recovery on year-over-year basis. Among the vendors in the market, only Aastra, Mitel (Nasdaq: MITL) and ShoreTel (Nasdaq: SHOR) posted positive PBX revenue gains in 2Q11 over 1Q11.

As has been the case for the past three quarters, the PBX market in Asia Pacific avoided the turmoil and sequential ups and downs of other regions, recording a fourth straight quarter of sequential PBX revenue growth; it was up some 29 percent from a year ago.

North America and EMEA continue to battle adverse economic conditions that have hit the enterprise telephony segment, causing companies in both regions to be reluctant to add employees or upgrade equipment.

Myers also said unified communications revenue increased 2.3 percent sequentially in the quarter to $112.4 million. She attributed the gain to the strength of worldwide Microsoft UC solution deployments.

The total service provider VoIP equipment market, including trunk media gateways, SBCs, media servers, softswitches, and voice application servers, decreased 9% from 2Q10 to 3Q10, to $511 million, according to Infonetics Research. While revenue is down for the quarter, shipments for almost all segments in the market are up sequentially.

26/08/2010 - Report: SBC market is on fire

Infonetics Research released its second quarter Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers and IMS Equipment and Subscribers market share and forecast reports and reports that session border controller (SBC) sales are responsible for growth in the VoIP equipment market.

According to the report, the service provider VoIP equipment market--which includes trunk media gateways, SBCs, media servers, softswitches, and voice application servers--increased to $564.7 million in 2Q2010, up 5.3 percent from the previous quarter. Everything but trunk media gateways grew sequentially in 2Q2010. The most interesting note, though, is that only SBCs grew year-over-year.

"The session border controller (SBC) market is on fire, with worldwide revenue up 27 percent sequentially and up 70 percent from this quarter last year, a signal that IP-to-IP connectivity continues to overtake IP-to-TDM connectivity. SBCs and media servers will be the main growth engines of the carrier VoIP equipment market for 2010," predicted Diane Myers, directing analyst for service provider VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research in the release.

Infonetics Research released its biannual VoIP and UC Services and Subscribers report, which tracks business and residential/SOHO voice over IP services and includes a North America Business VoIP Services Leadership Matrix that analyzes and ranks the top service providers in the VoIP business services market.

The report shows that demand for residential and business VoIP services continues to grow even as spending in other communication areas tightens. For the first half of 2009, the worldwide VoIP services market grew to $20.7 billion. Residential VoIP services remain healthy, comprising the majority of worldwide VoIP services revenue, and subscribers are up 14% from the end of 2008.

Infonetics Research released results from its IMS Plans: Global Service Provider Survey. It shows that 80% of Infonetics’ service provider respondents run fixed voice over IMS today or will by 2011 and that more than half of the service provider respondents plan to deploy video telephony and converged mobile/fixed-line services over the next 12–18 months.
