17/11/2011 - Polycom takes another step to drive video-conferencing interoperability

Ask anyone in the videoconferencing industry what the single biggest hurdle to its adoption is and you'll likely get the same answer: interoperability.
That's no real surprise, but the sudden push by vendors to make their product play nice with everybody else is.
The latest convert to the interoperability bandwagon is, not surprisingly, Polycom (Nasdaq: PLCM). Polycom was a founding member of the Open Visual Communications Consortium (OVCC), an association of industry players--including companies like AT&T (NYSE: T), BCS Global, Bharti Airtel, BT Conferencing, Dialogic, Orange Business Services, Teliris, Telstra and Verizon (NYSE: VZ)--working to bring standards to the videoconferencing industry.
This week the company announced a new software update that allows customers using Polycom and other standards-based video collaboration solutions to join calls with non-standard Cisco TelePresence Systems, and vice-versa. The latest RealPresence Platform software update, released Wednesday, also further extends interoperability across Microsoft and IBM UC environments.
"This is a great win for anyone using video collaboration," said Sudhakar Ramakrishna, executive vice president and general manager of UC solutions and chief development officer at Polycom. "Our support for TIP is freeing users of non-standard Cisco telepresence by allowing them to connect to millions of other standards-based video systems that are deployed worldwide."
The company said the move "further establishes Polycom as the leader of open standards and interoperability and provides investment protection for our customers."
Gartner VP and analyst Mark Fabbi agrees. "Enterprises need to ensure they use open and interoperable protocols between network building blocks to ensure that they can achieve a high degree of functionality while preserving or migrating their existing investments," he said, adding that by leveraging multi-vendor networks, enterprises can improve network capabilities while significantly reducing costs and simplifying network complexity.
The latest Polycom software releases include full native TIP support for video calls, and extended support for H.323 and SIP networks, which allow organizations to access shared UC environments such as IBM Sametime and Microsoft Lync, even if participants are using legacy systems.
The software update eliminates the need for gateways and licenses, trimming costs and making it less complex, allows organizations to simply dial into a videoconference virtual meeting room.
Increasingly, companies are discovering that enterprise customers, and their little brothers, SMBs, are eager to dive into the videoconferencing pool, but they want to know what the bottom line is, and to make sure that their investment will be as flexible and as cutting edge a year from now as it is today.
Polycom and it's fellow OVCC members are trying to future proof their technology, and that's going to help them take a bigger share of the market.--Jim
19/09/2011 - Polycom sees video conferencing future in software, rebrands platform
The fight for share in the videoconferencing market continues to heat up; newcomers to the market are bringing cheaper, higher quality solutions to once wary businesses looking to get on board.
Industry stalwart Polycom (Nasdaq: PLCM), at last week's ITExpo, said it was backing a trend away from expensive hardware endpoints to more affordable software solutions. The company rolled out its own software strategy that it said would bring secure HD video collaboration to the broadest range of business, video, mobile and social networking applications through a standards-based infrastructure.
Polycom said the plan would redefine the unified communications market and accelerate adoption of its software. The company called the strategy key and said it was expecting to double the company's current run rate of approximately $1.5 billion to $3 billion in the next few years.
"Our software is at the core of enabling a highly differentiated customer experience," said Andy Miller, president and CEO of Polycom.
As part of its new strategy, Polycom rebranded its IC Intellegent Core video collaboration software. The product now will be called RealPresence Platform, and will, Polycom said, take an open-standards approach to integrate with various unified communications applications.

This should give the Xoom a big boost in the business market, where Apple leads at the moment with the Ipad and RIM is hoping to dominate with its Playbook tablet. The telepresence software features UC Intelligent Core infrastructure, which allows users to connect easily without extra network configuration.
It also allows users to easily and securely connect to existing teleconferencing devices. Both companies cited the potential benefits of using telepresence software on tablets, as it allows direct communication between employees at an office and employees on the go, making collaboration easier.
They hinted that future Motorola tablets will also feature Polycom's telepresence software, suggesting also that the Xoom will be only the first of many tablet devices from Motorola. Polycom's telepresence service will be available on Motorola's Xoom tablet in the second half of this year.

Thanks to a combination of better technology, lower prices and faster Internet connections, video communications finally are moving into the mainstream. "The industry is at an inflection point," says Andy Miller, CEO of Polycom (PLCM), an industry leader based in Pleasanton, Calif.
"In the past, video communications was mostly a boardroom technology, but that is rapidly changing," Polycom roughly splits the $2 billion market with its Norwegian rival Tandberg, which Cisco (CSCO) acquired earlier this year. Revenue growth for the industry is rising up, according to Miller. He expects the company to grow about 40% this year. IDC (IDC) predicts the compound annual growth rate for the industry for the next five years will be about 23%, roughly twice as fast as during the previous five.
07/06/2010 - Polycom launches Open Telepresence Experience 300 and H.264 High Profile compression support
Polycom made a few announcements this week with the launch of a new telepresence solution and support for a more efficient video compression technology.
Polycom's Open Telepresence Experience (OTXTM) 300 is an immersive telepresence solution delivers full 1080p video at up to half the bandwidth of comparable systems and, according to the company offers the lowest total cost of ownership.
The cost savings of the new Polycom OTX 300 comes partly from its ability to support high-definition video using up to 50 percent less bandwidth than competing solutions through Polycom's implementation of H.264 High Profile--a new video compression technology. As of the announcement, Polycom could claim to be the only company able to offer the new compression standard.
"Polycom telepresence helps customers address the increasingly critical challenge of collaborating across multiple locations," said Andrew Miller, president and CEO, Polycom in the release. "Using telepresence, Polycom customers save millions of dollars a year by improving productivity and reducing the need to travel. In addition, we estimate a mid-sized enterprise will spend up to $2.1M less in the first year of a typical Polycom telepresence deployment--including equipment, bandwidth, services and maintenance--versus a comparable deployment from Cisco."

04/03/2010 - REDCOM completes SIP interoperability testing with Polycom phones
REDCOM Laboratories, a designer of digital and IP-enabled telecom systems, completed its Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) interoperability testing for their HDX and SLICE 2100 Carrier-Class 4/5 softswitches with a number of SoundPoint IP phones from telepresence solutions provider Polycom.
REDCOM was able to verify 100 percent integration between the Polycom VoIP phones and REDCOM's HDX and SLICE 2100 SIP platforms after thorough testing. REDCOM engineers assured commercial customers that the phones and call platforms could be deployed together problem-free--highlighting that despite SIP being a standard that promotes compatibility, testing is still important.
"SIP is supposed to be a standard that eliminates many of the challenges with integrating systems from different vendors, but interoperability is not something that can be assumed or taken for granted," said Gerald Totsline, Director of Engineering, REDCOM in a release. "SIP interoperability testing is a good method of verification to ensure that when two SIP-based solutions are actually deployed that they will work together flawlessly."

07/10/2009 - Tandberg-Cisco deal puts Polycom in play?
Editor's Note: Polycom is for certain in play being such a large platform independent voice and video hardware manufacturer. I have been brainstorming what this means having the 8,000 pound gorilla now in the video conferencing market in such a major way with an army of sales people and marketing. If anyone have $3 billion and what to make a company to really take on this challenge, please contact me (I am very serious). I have already had some wealth managers call me asking my thoughts on this acquisition.
Cisco Systems Inc's overture for Norway's Tandberg puts U.S.-based Polycom Inc in play as it is the only public company now left in the video conferencing market. Polycom could also be gravitating toward selling itself as the threat of competing with a behemoth like Cisco looms large, analysts said. On October 1, network equipment maker Cisco said it entered a deal to buy Tandberg for $3 billion.
Polycom might be the best bet left for companies that want to tap the fast-growing video conferencing products market, worth about $2 billion in 2008. Cisco's peers might also want to play catch-up as a key high-growth market ends up in their rival's lap.
"Video has become strategic and there's a limited place to play it," Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen said. "Now that Tandberg is getting acquired, maybe it accelerates the timeframe."
"Polycom is a logical acquisition target for someone," Jensen added.
Polycom and Tandberg control three-fourths of the video conferencing products market. The rest of the market is fragmented with firms like Cisco, with its Telepresence products, Hewlett-Packard and privately held LifeSize rounding it out.
16/04/2009 - Polycom Q1 revenues, profit slip
Polycom reported first-quarter earnings Wednesday showing declines in revenues and income compared to Q1 2008, but strong increases in telepresence and systems revenues on a year-over-year basis. Polycom reported $225.4 million in net revenues for the first quarter of 2009, down 13 percent from the $258.9 million in revenues the company reported for Q1 2008. The company's 2009 first-quarter GAAP net income was $8 million, compared to $14.2 million in the same quarter in 2008.
Polycom CEO Robert Hagerty said the economic environment was to blame for the dip in revenues and earnings, but that the company's core business drivers remained strong. He touted 45 percent year-over-year growth in telepresence solutions and said new product launches would help expand the company's market opportunity.
Polycom CFO Michael Kourey said the company has adjusted its cost structure to maintain operating margins in the face of slipping revenue. Kourey said Polycom remains in very strong financial shape, as it posted its 45th consecutive quarter of positive operating cash flow, and has $338.7 million in cash and investments and no debt.

09/03/2009 - Polycom releases business desktop video phone - VVX 1500

Polycom, Inc., the global leader in telepresence, video, and voice communications solutions, has redefined desktop communications with the introduction of its first business media phone, the Polycom VVX(TM) 1500. The VVX 1500 is the first device of its kind -- a business media phone that combines a personal video conferencing system with a fully featured voice over IP (VoIP) telephone with Polycom HD Voice(TM) and an open application programming interface (API) and microbrowser for real-time delivery of personalized Web content as well as integration with key business applications.
"We anticipate that within five years, nearly 10 million business media phones will be shipped worldwide, generating more than U.S. $3 billion in annual revenue. They are a key to the future of the IP PBX business," commented Keith Nissen, principal analyst at In-Stat. "With its rich heritage in voice and visual communications and content sharing, Polycom is well positioned to be a leader in this new world of communications. The company's VVX 1500 is the first business media phone that enables customers to work more efficiently and effectively than ever before by tying together voice and visual communication with critical business processes."
BroadSoft, a leading provider of VoIP applications and a long-standing partner of Polycom, has been integral in bringing the VVX 1500 to market. "There is growing demand from our service providers and customers to help them configure video within our BroadWorks call control platform," said Mike Tessler, CEO of BroadSoft. "We have a long history of teaming with Polycom to deliver high quality hosted VoIP solutions, and the VVX 1500 is especially compelling because it goes far beyond the functionality of a traditional video phone by combining rich telephony, business-class video and an applications platform that is all deeply integrated with the BroadWorks platform, and it is extremely easy to use."
Initiate voice and video calls with the simple touch of the screen
By combining voice and video into a single personal device with an intuitive touch-screen interface, the VVX 1500 simplifies communications while delivering a truly collaborative experience. With a large color LCD display and Polycom HD Voice technology, the VVX 1500 enables high-resolution, face-to-face collaboration without requiring travel, delivering a compelling return on investment.
Companies can reduce their carbon footprint and become more environmentally responsible by using Polycom's voice and visual communication solutions and allowing their geographically dispersed workforce to meet virtually -- anytime and from anywhere. In addition to the inherently green nature of video conferencing, the VVX 1500 was specifically designed for lower power consumption, using power over Ethernet (PoE), and requires less than half the power of similar competing products such as traditional video phones. The device's smart-motion technology enables the screen to go into power-save mode when no one is in the office.
Access business information at-a-glance
The VVX 1500 features an open API and microbrowser that enable third-party application developers to integrate VVX 1500 with business applications such as unified communications, customer relationship management (CRM), and appointment management systems. The always-on, touch-screen user interface of the VVX 1500 includes a menu screen on which developers can place icons for users to locate and start their applications.
The VVX 1500 comes bundled with several applications including the Polycom Productivity Suite, which enables users to initiate and control audio conference calls right from the device's screen as well as record calls locally using a flash drive in the phone's USB port. The VVX 1500 also features a free Web service called My Info Portal through which customers can select to receive content such as local weather reports and other personalized information on the screen when the device is not in a voice or video call.
Broad interoperability with the leading VoIP Platforms
The VVX 1500 uses the same Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) software as incorporated in Polycom's SoundPoint IP and SoundStation IP desktop and conference phone product lines to communicate with SIP based IP PBX and hosted call servers. The product is in the process of being SIP video-certified by Polycom's ecosystem of more than 30 VIP and VoIP Field Verified call control partners, including BroadSoft, Deltapath, NEC Sphere, Objectworld, and Zultys.
"Our customers consistently seek better leverage of their communication systems to improve productivity and reduce costs. They also expect Polycom to continuously deliver innovative, intuitive products to market," said Sunil Bhalla, senior vice president and general manager of Voice Communications Solutions at Polycom. "Our leadership and legacy in both voice and video communications enables us to develop a truly unique device. The VVX 1500 is the business media phone to combine a superior business-grade VoIP telephone that features our renowned HD Voice with one-touch video and access to key enterprise applications. We are delighted propel collaborative communications to the next level with this ground-breaking device."

03/03/2009 - Polycom releases HD 8006 and QDX6000 Video Conferencing Solution
When asked about the entry-level Polycom system, David Shimell, Sales Director for VideoCentric said, "The low price and high performance of the QDX 6000, particularly where internet bandwidth is limited, makes it easy for small organisations to justify purchasing two or three systems to gain a rapid return on their investment (RoI).
Those who have never conferenced before, or those that have had poor quality experiences in the past will benefit immediately from increased productivity, faster decision making, smarter working practices and lower travel costs at a time when efficiency of staff and resources needs to be at a premium". He added, "The ability to also show an image from a PC, a DVD player or visualiser on the same screen, a second screen or a projector as well as enjoying CD-quality audio and high resolution video makes it ideal for organisations who need to discuss any visual material with fine detail such as textiles, architect drawings, manufacturing plans, web page design, financial spreadsheets, graphs, charts, forecasts as well as for transmitting live SMART Board annotations for corporate training and school teaching applications".
The high-end HDX8006 offers the same extensive feature-set but with Full 1080-P HD capability for those with higher levels of bandwidth on their LAN, WAN, VPN, MPLS networks. It comes complete with a new Polycom Eagle-Eye camera (based on the excellent Sony HD1 optical technology) and can support HD multi-way videoconferencing without the need for an external MCU, although for bandwidth efficiency reasons,
VideoCentric still recommends hosting a separate high performance MCU at its data centre where plentiful bandwidth can be assured and where the same bridging unit can be shared by other regional divisions parts of the same organisation or with external customers & suppliers, thereby avoiding issues surrounding video firewall management and inter-IT-department conflict.
