Polycom's RealPresence app is now in the App Store. |
The company said it plans to make its RealPresence app available for the iPhone 4S early this month and will soon follow that with one for smartphones using Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android 4.0 OS.
The app provides users with a secure, enterprise-grade video software solution for mobile devices--a feature users increasingly are saying is important. Polycom said its app allows mobile device users to easily connect with other standards-based video systems including immersive video rooms, group and desktop systems, laptops, tablets and smartphones in HD quality.
The app can connect over Wi-Fi, 3G or a 4G LTE connection, Polycom said.
The company launched an iPad and Android version of the app in October. It's available via a free download from the Apple App Store and Android Market.
RealPresence Mobile can be registered to the RealPresence Platform, giving users features including provisioning, management, firewall traversal, content sharing and connectivity to desktop and immersive video room systems, including multi-party calls.
"Polycom's vision is to make video collaboration ubiquitous by delivering easy-to-use, standards-based software to anyone on any device," said Andy Miller, CEO of Polycom.

The app, available now in the iTunes App Store, allows iPhone 4S users of Vidyo's videoconferencing platform to video conference with up to four endpoints and share content.
Apple's launch of iOS 5 earlier this month prompted a flurry of videoconferencing app rollouts for Apple mobile devices looking to take advantage of the operating system's new features.
Vidyo, which in September announced it had landed $22.5 million in VC to expand its sales and marketing, was among those companies announcing updated apps, and it promised support for the iPhone 4S eventually.
Today's announcement helps it take full advantage of videoconferencing's most visible trend, mobility. The company said the iPhone 4S, because of its more robust processor, will deliver the same experience on the iPhone 4S that it delivers on the iPad 2 including a pinch to zoom capability which enables a better user experience when sharing content on a small screen or even enlarging a given participant.
"VidyoMobile delivers an unmatched multipoint experience on the iPhone 4S and enables mobile workers to hold a true enterprise video conference system in the palms of their hands," said Ofer Shapiro, CEO and co-founder of Vidyo.
VidyoMobile can participate in conferences with more than 100 participants, displaying up to 4 participants at a time on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. It provides the user the ability to customize the view and select presentation materials to improve collaboration. Participants are displayed using the active speaker feature, which automatically displays the current and the last few speakers.

The new program offers service providers and solution developers a trade-in promo to replace deployed video gateways with a Dialogic Vision 1000 Video Gateway. Vision Plus participants will trade in their competing old video gateways for a Dialogic one. Companies can also purchase a reduced price lab bundle which includes free remote installation and remote training. The Vision 1000 Video Gateway's 3G-324M interoperability and real-time video transcoding offers users enhanced video quality for interactive mobile video services such as social networking, integrated video conferencing, video call completion to voice, video SMS or video voice mail, video surveillance, interactive voice and video response and video advertising.
"As mobile networks grow to support billions of subscribers worldwide, video services represent an exciting approach to generating new revenue streams. The new iPhone OS will be released today--for the iPhone 3G and iTouch as the iPhone 4 is not out yet--and app heads are already chomping at the bit to get the next-gen apps for their iPhone. Sadly Skype has already fallen victim to their impatience.
On the 9-5 Mac blog, writers are picking up on the app impatience as Skype is not ready to release their iOS4 Skype version just yet. It seems what is making users mad is the fact that Skype was featured in Apple's presentation of the iPhone 4 and thus some customers assumed that the Skype app was ready for prime time.
According to Skype, the numerous changes to the iPhone operating system requires them to go through and make sure their app is delivering the best experience possible on the new platform. They've essentially told users, it will be ready when its ready, meaning it could be months before it goes live. My guess is that Skype could actually just be waiting until June 24 when the iPhone 4 ships. Perhaps all we need is a little patience.

The science fiction world has been dreaming of it for a long time and it has finally arrived: a video voice call communicator in the palm of your hand. We thought Skype would probably be bringing it to us, but in the end Apple being the end-to-end experience provider that they are developed their own video VoIP software for their newest mobile phone, the iPhone 4.
Prior to launch, the Internet was a-tweet with chatter that the new iPhone would feature a Skype video conferencing application right on the heels of the company's 3G calling app for the regular iPhone. It came as a surprise when the video conferencing software ended up being an in-house creation from Apple called FaceTime.
Reviewers have stated that Skype doesn't have too much to fear at the moment as iPhone 4 is just starting to grow its user base and the front facing camera needed to take advantage of a video conferencing application is still absent on most phones. Additionally, FaceTime only works over WiFi at the moment.

While at VoiceCon last week, Nortel CVAS made some other interesting headlines more related to the wireless world than the wireline world. As FierceVoIP has previously pointed out, echoing some IP communications industry leaders, mobile broadband-based VoIP is going to be part of our future. Nortel CVAS decided to take a step toward that future by announcing their 4G wireless push last week.
With empowering service providers being the name of its game, Nortel CVAS' 4G Mobile VoIP solution allows operators to integrate seamlessly with 2G, 3G and 4G LTE and WiMAX networks. What's notable is the offering's ability to deliver a consistent set of voice, messaging and multimedia services to all of the subscriber's devices, with seamless hand-off across WiFi, GSM 2G/3G, CDMA 2G/3G, HSPA/+, WiMAX and LTE networks. Seamless handoff means moving from one network to the next won't drop a call, hurt call quality or trigger anything that might tip off the end user that it is even happening.
With this offering, Nortel CVAS is implementing the first large scale 4G VoIP network that will offer these seamless hand-offs between 4G mobile VoIP and the current 2G/3G cellular voice networks as well as WiFi.
