The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that, effective Dec. 16, VoIP providers will be subject to outage reporting requirements. According to Arent Fox's This Week in Telecom, VoIP providers are required to notify the FCC within four hours of discovering an outage of 30 minutes or more that could affect a 911 facility. The VoIP provider must also notify the 911 facility and provide information that may be helpful to lessen the effects of the outage. If a VoIP provider experiences an outage of 30 minutes or more that does not affect a 911 facility but potentially affects at least 900,000 user minutes or interconnected VoIP service and results in complete loss of service or affects any special offices and facilities, the provider must notify the FCC electronically within 24 hours.
