We reported a little while back that Skype was turning its back on the Windows Mobile platform. Today more reports are coming out that the company has no plan to even develop software for the new Windows Phone 7 operating system.
According to ZDNet (who in turn quotes Australian tech website Smarthouse), Skype's VP of Asia/Pacific revealed at an event in Sydney the company had no plans for VoIP software on the new Microsoft platform. While the VP did not want to go into further details, he did reveal that the plan was to focus on software for Android, iPhone and iPad. It seems like an interesting turn for a successful VoIP company to turn away from a leading mobile platform, but with new shiny interfaces hitting phones, the Windows phone market seems to have taken a beating.
Back in February we picked up a story that Skype had pulled their Windows app from being downloaded. The company claimed it felt like Skype Lite compared to other phone experiences. At the time we speculated that Skype was just pulling the software until they got a better version for the future Windows Phone 7 OS, but these new developments point to the company jumping the Microsoft ship. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that unless Phone 7 really crashes and burns, we are going to see a Skype app on Microsoft smartphones no matter what the rumors say now.
